Reader's note

A young courier of Sunshine Tours conducts a coach-party of Anglo-American tourists form Genoa to Rome. One of the party, an English schoolmistress, draws his attention to a vagrant woman lying asleep in the doorway of a church near the via Veneto. The posture of the vagrant, supplicating and bowed, reminds him of something which he cannot name. The courier is caught up in the ensuing drama, so strangely connected with his own boyhood memories and with the Festival shortly to take place in the historic streets of Ruffano, when the students of the University are to enact scenes from the life of the mad Duke, known as The Falcon.
