Reader's note

Daphne du Maurier was the second daughter of the famous actor and theatre manager-producer, the late Sir Gerald du Maurier, and the granddaughter of George du Maurier, the much loved Punch artist and the author of Trilby and Peter Ibberston. After being educated at home with her sisters and then in Paris, she began writing short stories and articles in 1928, and in 1931 her first novel, The Loving Spirit, was published. In this book Daphne du Maurier captures the charm and humour of the actor who played the original Captain Hook. She recounts his whimsicality as well as delicately revealing his darker side and bouts of depression. A wonderful addition to any Daphne du Maurier collection.
