Reader's note

This is a lovely bright edition of C.S.Lewis’s Out of the Silent Planet. This edition contains an introduction and notes Daivd Elloway. If C.S.Lewis has been writing today he would probably have paid more attention to the problems of the weightlessness in a space-ship. It is also probable that he would have left out that tinkling of ‘meteorites’ against the sides of the ship. But even as late as 1955 many scientists thought that space travel would be made impossible by the continual rain of meteors; it wasn't until the first satellite has been launched that it was confirmed that meteors large enough to make any impression on a spaceship are too rare to be a serious danger. Out of the Silent Planet is not the sort of science fiction that depends on its interest on the mechanics of space flight. The vehicle is merely a means of getting the characters into space and to Mars; it is enough that the voyage should sound plausible and this is achieved by mentioning the use of solar radiation as a means of propulsion.
