Reader's note

This antique gem will look wonderful in any library it is placed in The author herself admits that her tale is an emotional one from the very first page as the reader is introduced to the character of Jess - It is not a very bright picture which I am going to draw for you, but one likely to make you feel sad. I want to take you into a small tent which at present forms the home of part of a gang of hop-pickers at work in the hop-gardens of Kent. When we go in, it seems to be empty; but it is not, for there in the corner, lying on some straw, is a little girl, and it is about her I want to tell you. If you were to ask her she would say her name was just 'Jess' and nothing else. - a sad beginning to a story, this book is a Christian expression of hope in the darkest of times.
