Reader's note

Covent Garden has never been more popular than it is today. The enthusiasts for opera and ballet who now fill the famous and beautiful old theatre must have often felt a keen curiosity about its past. To the younger generation of music lovers, the international Opera Seasons given there between the two world wars are already hearsay; the brilliant Melba-Caruso nights of the Edwardian epoch a legend; Patti and Jean de Reszke dim figures on the dim horizon. This book is an attempt to satisfy such natural curiosity. It traces the picturesque and often stormy history of the three theatres which, since 1732, have successively occupied the former ‘convent’ site. And, being a ‘musical chronicle’, it lays particular emphasis upon the last hundred years: the period during which covent garden became, first a centre for generations of the worlds famous artists, and in recent years our principal national home of opera and ballet. This book contains illustrations in colour and monochrome these include portraits, sketches, water colours, and a range of scenes that help bring this book to life. This book is a wonderful addition to any home library!
