Reader's note

This intriguing looking paperback is a 1971 edition of On War by Carl Von Clausewitz. He is best remembered for his announcement that war is a continuation of politics by other means and for his observations on total war: but modern strategists who profess to apply his doctrines would do well to read him again. For Clausewitz, as Professor Rapoport contends, made a distinction between judicious and injudicious war, and the relationship he detected between war and politics really means that war can only be waged in certain circumstances.
