Reader's note

As late as the middle of the eighteenth century knowledge in Europe of the pacific Ocean, covering almost one third of the globe’s surface, was sketchy and incomplete. This situation was transformed in the period between the end of the Seven Years’ War in 1763 and the outbreak of the French revolutionary wars thirty years later. Britain and France in particular experienced a ‘Pacific craze’, in which new celebrities emerged in the shape of naval explorers and itinerant scientists. Ships set off into the unknown, to return three or four years later laden with specimens from the South Seas and with their crews eager to publish descriptions, maps and views of the wondrous places visited and peoples seen. This surge of seaborne exploration was associated above all with the voyages of James Cook.
