Reader's note

This book is an admirable presentation in colours of butterflies and moths with many of their caterpillars. Something of the life history of each species is given in a format that is both interesting to read and easy to understand. A lot of the colour plates in this stunning title were drawn from insects in the private collections that belonged to both of the authors. With people who have more than a passing interest in the subject writing the book, their enthusiasm is infectious. This extract is taken from their preface - if you catch a butterfly and let it go again, your fingers are covered with a kind of mealy dust. If you look at a little of this dust through a microscope you will find that it is made up of thousands of the smallest possible scales, all most beautifully chiselled and sculptured' - find out more of the smallest details from the lepidopteran world.
