Reader's note

Writers have often tried their hand at fictional impostures but perhaps none with such masterly skill as Josephine Tey in her ‘missing heir’ novel. But putting it in this rather dismissive category, besides being only half true, is to denigrate a remarkable work. Imposture stories are fraught with mystery; they require considerable detective work, contain a puzzle to be solved and a revelation at their culmination. But though a consummate writer of detective fiction, Josephine Tey will have none of that in her Brat Farrar. Here is no mystery. The reader knows from the start that the boy who looks so uncannily like the vanished heir is not Patrick Ashby but an imposter, corrupted into deceitful machinations by an unscrupulous conman.
