Reader's note

This book is a wonderful history of the art form of blackwork embroidery. To be properly appreciated, blackwork needs to be studied in conjunction with the social aqnd domestic scene in which is flourished, and the book accordingly starts with a brief historical survey. There follow chapters on techniques today, design patterns, and materials and threads. In a book of this sort, illustrations naturally claim an importance equal to that of text; these are numerous, varied, representative of both antique and recent work, and full of stimulating ideas for the worker. The use of cut paper, in itself a familiar aid to planning, is treated in a particularly helpful way. Whether you are a novice or a master of blackwork, you will learn something new right here!
