Reader's note

Add some bright orange to your bookshelf with this brilliant piece of classic mythology. Beowulf is one of the longest as well as the most important of complete poems in Old English. It is not a relic of savage bygones, nor is it merely a document of historical importance. It is the only native English heroic epic, and one of the finest products of what used to be called the Dark Ages of Europe. There is also the point - until recently overlooked - that it is a great poem in it's own right. Its theme is the conflict of good and evil. It is an expression of the fear of the dark, an examination of the nature and purpose of heroism, and great statement of Anglo-Saxon outlook and imagination. Beowulf has inspired so much and this exciting hardback edition from Penguin is the perfect addition to a collection.
