Reader's note

The Fairy Caravan is the story of a miniature circus - William and Alexander’s Travelling Circus. It was no ordinary circus, for Alexander was a Highland terrier to his friends and William was a Pony Billy who drew the caravan. The animals played all the parts-there was Paddy the Pig who was on occasion the Irish Pig that would dance the jig, the Learned Pig and the Pygmy Elephant; Tuppenny the long haired guinea-pig and Xarifa the Dormouse. The circus performed only for the animals of the farms and fields they passed, for magic ferseed in their hair shielded them from the eyes of humans. In this longer book for older children, Beatrix Potter has again conveyed that deep understanding and love of animals and the countryside which has endeared her ‘Peter Rabbit Books’ to generations of children.
