Reader's note

A beautifully patterned 1964 edition of The Penguin Poets, featuring fantastic poetry from Baudelaire. The verses are both written in the original French and translated into English so you can experience the talent twice! 'A poet whose work is so complex and diverse, though apparently so simple and unified, as Baudelaire's is not to be summarised in any convenient formula. Yet many attempts of this kind have been made; they are useful and have to be taken seriously. A modern Dante? This suggestion, first made in 1857 by Thierry, has been discussed and modified by T.S. Eliot who would be more satisfied with a comparison with Goethe.'
