Historians and critics alike agree that no one else has left a more accurate and sympathetic picture of upper and middle class society in mid-Victorian days that Anthony Trollope. He liked the world he was born into. He was a moralist and judged his characters, but he considered that you should judge them in relation to the role they were given to play in life. You must acknowledge that a squire, a clergyman, a member of Parliament, a lawyer or a parent, is entitled to behave in accordance with his calling. A man’s position in life will affect his choice of a bride as well as his behaviour to his superiors or his servants.
