Reader's note

When Agne’s family becomes impoverished after a disastrous financial speculation, Agnes Grey determines to find work as a governess in order to contribute to their meagre income and assert her independence. But her enthusiasm is swiftly extinguished as she struggles with the unmanageable children of English gentry; the only kindness she receives comes from Mr Weston, the sober young curate. Anne Bronte's first novel offers a personal perspective on the desperate position of unmarried, educated women for whom becoming a governess was the only respectable career open in Victorian society. Like her sisters she has a strong female lead and in her writing voices her concern for unmarried educated women’s limited life choices. This is a novel with a strong voice and would suit anyone who is a fan of the Brontes or other classic stories.
