This collection is famous all over the world and many of the stories have been adapted into many different forms of media! Read the original and best as The Little Mermaid longs to visit the surface - Many a night she stood at the open window and gazed up through the dark blue waters where the fish went waving their fins and tails. She could see the moon and the stars; of course they were very pale, but, seen through the water, they looked much larger than they do to our eyes. If something like a black cloud passed along beneath them, she knew that it was either a whale swimming above her. - see if this version of the story is the same as you remember!
