Reader's note

This bold and blue first edition Pelican, can take pride of place in any reference library. The bible is the sacred book of Christianity. It grew up in the course of some profound transitions in history and religion, and its path in both ancient and medieval times has been marked by suffering, persecution and martyrdom. The unique part it has played in directing and framing the thought of the West is often forgotten, and it remains perhaps the most misunderstood of books of the world's literature. Today, biblical criticism, the comparative study of religions, the recovery of much of the ancient past, the increase of knowledge, and current conditions of life and thought combine to make the Bible a book to be read, not only for its devotional value but its literary value as well.
