Reader's note

This vintage gem from 1966 gives a brief account of the framing of the constitution, of the ideas that lay behind it and how of those ideas have been changed and modified by the shifting currents of history and politics. Through the complex and sometimes bewildering maze of constitutional theory and practice, of the relationship between President, Congress and the Supreme Court, of the organisation and policies of the political parties, of State government and local government, the author Allen M. Potter is an unfailingly lucid guide. He ends with a penetrating and timely discussion of freedom and democracy in America today. This book is an admirable introduction to the history of the structure of the American political system and has some useful pointers as to how it is really operated.
