Reader's note

A decorative 1965 edition of Aldous Huxley’s The Doors of Perception Heaven and Hell. It describes how the author submitted himself as 'a guinea pig' to mescalin, the active principle of a drug, peyotl, long known to the Mexican Indians. He found that it resulted in an extraordinarily heightened visual awareness: in Blake's phrase, 'the doors of perception were cleansed'. In the companion volume, Heaven and Hell, Aldous Huxley is concerned with 'the supreme truth that perception... can be the same as Revelation',. Certain drugs can take the experimenter into an unexplored New World of the mind. This world can have the characteristics of heaven, but negative emotions - fear, hatred, anger, or malice - will turn this heaven into hell.
