Reader's note

Antic Hay is a satirical masterpiece which takes its title from one of Marlowe’s couplets “My men, like satyrs grazing on the lawns, Shall with their goat-feet dance the antic hay.” The place and period of the story is London in the years immediately after the war of 1914-18, years of disillusion and excess in which old values were submerged in a tidal wave of cynicism. They lives a crazy life, these artists adrift, intellectuals who have lost their bearings, and women who try to forget their griefs in the pursuit of a good time. Huxley has drawn these rakes and escaptists with such precision and colour that some of his critics were misled into the assumption that he approved their attitude to life. But although Huxley is too good a novelist to deliver a sermon, there is no doubt in his satirical intention in portraying this period of disruption, and among the satyrs there are to be found men of goodwill (and good humour) who, like Thedors Gumbril, are recovering a true vision of life.
