Reader's note

Read this important book by Mary Wollstonecraft! This is an 1975 edition of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman which was first published way back in 1792! It was received with a mixture of outrage and enthusiasm. In an age of ferment, following the American and French Revolutions, Mary Wollstonecraft took prevailing egalitarian principles and dared to apply them to women. Her book is both a sustained argument for emancipation and an attack on social and economic system. And unfortunately is still a very relevant argument for the unfair treatment of the majority of women around the world today. 'Most of the evils of life arise from a desire of present enjoyment than outruns itself. The obedience required of women in the marriage state comes under this description; the mind, naturally weakened by depending on authority, never exerts its own powers, and the obedient wife is thus rendered a weak indolent mother.'
