Reader's note

When John Flynn set out as a young Presbyterian missionary into the heart of the Australian continent, the settles there were leading the hardest and loneliest of lives, often hundreds of miles away from their nearest neighbors and from help in case of trouble. All his life Flynn was fascinated by the vast Inland and its problem. Starting with a pedal-radio set transmitted message in Morse Code, he brought the Flying Doctors Service into being. By the time he died in 1951, almost every isolated sheep or cattle station had its own two way wireless, thanks to the tireless efforts of Flynn and his colleagues. Today, not only can doctors be summoned to fly to urgent cases, or asked for advice, but also families in widely separated homesteads can chat to one another. Flynn, with this great determination and resourcefulness, brought a ‘mantel of safely’ over Inland, and banished loneliness from its two million square miles. His story is indeed one to remember.
