'H. H. Munroe was born in Burma in 1870, and spent his childhood in North Devon under the strict tutelage of his aunt and grandmother. He studied at Exmouth and Bedford Grammar School and upon his father's retirement from service in India, toured Europe. Spent two years in police service in India, after which he started writing for periodicals in London. In 1902 was Balkan correspondent for the Morning Post; was also correspondent in Warsaw, Petersburg and Paris. In 1908, after the death of his father, to whom he was very much attached, he settled in London, where he contributed to many leading journals.'
