Reader's note

This is the first of a two parter! Translated from the original Latvian, this brilliant story is inspired by the author's real life experiences! He states in his forward - As a child I lived on the edge of an enormous age-old marsh. That marsh was a source of hardship to the local peasants. I saw how helpless those poor peasants were in their struggle against the marsh. But today, where not long ago even an animal could not find its way through the wilderness, there are rich fields and abundant pastures. I witnessed the transformation of that marsh. I saw happy people whom nothing could stop in their struggle formed the basic idea of my novel Towards New Shores which I finished in 1951, after two years of intensive work. - truly a labour of love and a great addition to any collection.
