Reader's note

Daniel Defoe is better known as the author of Robinson Crusoe; but this, the history of Moll Flanders and her extraordinary career, is not only his finest work, but one of the greatest works in the English language. Written in the first person, it is a window on the eighteenth century: Moll Flanders describes vividly the circumstances of her upbringing, and her misfortunes singular and varied, as the original subtitle sets forth so succinctly: the pace is swift, the style concise, the characters and situations composed with unflinching realism. Here in these pages is the real eighteenth century, the ferocity, crime and squalor beneath the sophisticated veneer that later historical fiction cannot convey. And yet, it lacks nothing in grace or even charm; Defoe, the true reporter, here offers a story which once started, grips the reader by its very authenticity of presentation.
