A vintage Pelican book: The Psychology of Sex by Oswald Schwarz. As morality is the principle which governs and guards any human relationship, the main theme of this book is an analysis of the interaction of the physical sexual urge and the moral principle, with the conclusion that nothing that is truly natural can be really immoral. Such a statement makes sense only if morality is properly defined and clearly distinguished from what one may call conventional taboos. The much-discussed 'problem of sex' then stands revealed as the result of confusion of the real or essential morality with time-honoured but outworn convention. On this basis the author analyses the various forms of sexual activity: masturbation, homosexuality in youth, prostitution, 'affairs'; and demonstrates that they are stages in a development which ultimately leads to marriage as the complete form of sexual relationship. A few case histories serve to illustrate the basic theory of this book and its application. The thesis that an 'essentially' moral sex life is the expression of the whole personality throws a light on, and provides a scientific basis for the discussion of, some social aspects of sex life, such as prostitution, birth control, and divorce.
