Reader's note

A wonderful copy of Daphne du Maurier’s The Apple Tree: A Short Novel and Several Long Stories. This enjoyable volume collects six of du Maurier’s popular and macabre tales. The Apple Tree is the story of a neglectful man, recently widowed and enjoying his newfound freedom. However, in his garden is an apple tree that reminds him of his wife, and he hates it. The fruit it produces tastes rancid and it keeps all the younger trees in its shadow. It haunts his every waking moment and he revolves to remove it. Also included is The Birds, a horror story made famous by Alfred Hitchcock’s film. A Cornish family are attacked by flocks of aggressive birds, and they have to stay inside their house to remain safe while dealing with the pecks at the windows and the birds coming down the chimney. This book contains the titles: Monte Verità; The Birds; The Apple Tree; The Little Photographer; Kiss Me again, Stranger; The Old Man.
