This is a wonderful 1st edition of Daphne du Maurier’s Rule Britannia. In Cornwall, Emma lives with her grandmother - the eccentric, retired actress, Madam. One day she awakes to find her world a very different place. There is no post, no telephone and no radio… and an American warship sits in the harbour. Britain is on the brink of economic collapse and has entered a partnership with the United States, however this equal union looks to be more of a military occupation. Tensions rise between the locals and the interlopers when a trigger-happy marine shoots a local farmer’s sheep dog. Du Maurier offers a chilling look into a fictional near future.
