Celebrating Diwali: Classic Tales of Good VS Evil

2 min read

In celebration of Diwali, the magnificent upcoming Indian festival of lights, we have compiled a short list of some of the most classic, beloved, and well-known tales of good triumphing over the forces of evil. After all, what could be more fitting in appreciation of an event which represents the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance? These are themes which have long been common in literature, and below are just some of the best examples of this.

The Lord of the Rings

One of the best-selling novels of all time (and for good reason), J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is perhaps the ultimate example of good overcoming the forces of evil. Using industry to symbolize darkness and the natural world to symbolize light and all that's good, this tale of unlikely heroes in the face of overwhelming odds is heartwarming, memorable, and more influential on the genre of fantasy than words can say. A true classic, and deserving of a place on any reader's bookshelf, no matter your usual tastes.

Dracula

Bram Stoker's Dracula is a novel so profound that it remains perhaps even more influential today than it was a century ago. With the evil, cunning, and bloodthirsty titular character battling against Van Helsing and his group as they attempt to thwart the villain's plans (whose intentions are to move to England out of desire to find new blood and spread the vampire curse), this story is dark, daring, and another fantastic example of the forces of good and evil clashing in epic proportions in literature.

The Chronicles of Narnia

Who could forget C. S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia? These classic children's books form a seven-book saga that remains fondly remembered and widely read across the globe today. Featuring classic and loveable characters (we're looking at you Aslan), as well as cruel and cunning villains in a fantastical world, it would be a crime not to include this entire work on our list. We could have just chosen one book from the series, but where's the fun in that?

A Christmas Carol

With Christmas waiting around the corner, we simply couldn't finish this list without Charles Dickens' festive classic. While evil may be a strong word to describe the miserable Ebenezer Scrooge, he is certainly an unpleasant, unfriendly, and downright rotten character. That's why this story shines so much; through seeing the errors in his ways through paranormal means, even a character like Scrooge (whose own name now serves as a descriptive word for a party pooper) can find love in their heart eventually. A story with a joyful end to warm the soul - just like this list!
