Vintage Books for Wednesday Addams' School Bag

With the new Netflix series Wednesday, based on the fictional Wednesday Addams of the Addams Family, reaching great success, we wanted to share a list of classic books that we think Wednesday Addams would have in her bag. With gothic settings, curious characters, and dark themes, these macabre tales are well-suited to Wednesday's dark, solemn and at times sadistic personality.

The book contains a collection of weird tales, including horror, sci-fi, fantasy and more. 3. EDGAR ALLAN POE’S TALES OF SUSPENSE - READER’S DIGEST 1992

EDGAR ALLAN POE’S TALES OF SUSPENSE - READER’S DIGEST 1992

With its grey and black cover, this book is perfectly suited to the black clad and emotionless Wednesday Addams. The volume contains a collection of Poe’s famously suspenseful short stories. Poe’s draws readers right into the heart of each tale, crafting his works with powerful language and chilling themes. From classic gothic horror stories such as The Fall of the House of Usher to detective tales like The Murders in the Rue Morgue, there are a wide range of suspenseful stories to choose from. 4. UNHOLY TRINITY BY RAY RUSSELL 1967 - BANTAM

UNHOLY TRINITY BY RAY RUSSELL 1967 - BANTAM

A collection containing three gothic novellas: Sanguinarius, Sardonicus, and Sagittarius. Three tales, three demonic creatures and three eerie adventures. The collection begins with the authors own introduction, a confession titled ‘The Haunted Castle: A Confession’. The stories contain many gothic tropes and rest something between homage and pastiche. Russell certainly succeeds in imitating the styles, structures, and atmospheres of the original mid-19th Century Gothic novella. He also references many historical figures in his tales, including the incarcerated Countess Elizabeth Bathory, and Jack the Ripper. A great collection for Wednesday Addams’ literary bag.

  5. SHAKESPEARE VOLUME III TRAGEDIES 1963 - COLLINS

SHAKESPEARE VOLUME III TRAGEDIES 1963 - COLLINS

Though the cover is bright, the plays inside are dark and tragic. Containing eight Shakespeare tragedies, readers bear witness to the darkness of Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Timon of Athens, Julius Caesar, Titus Andronicus, Troilus and Cressida, and Coriolanus. Despair, death and disillusion are recurrent themes in these famous plays with famously tragic endings. Though drama rather than fiction, such themes would certainly appeal to the dark, imaginative and intelligent Wednesday Addams.
