The second volume in this epic saga describes the circumstances faced by the old château of Hougomont in the second chapter -  The English barricaded themselves in it; the French penetrated, but could not hold their ground there. By the side of the chapel stands a wing of the château, the sole relic left of the Manor of Hougomont, in ruins; we might almost say gutted. The château was employed as a keep, the chapel served as a block-house. Men exterminated each other there. The French, fired upon from all sides, from behind walls, from granaries, from cellars, from every window, from every air-hole, from every crack in the stone, brought up fascines, and set fire to the walls and men; the musketry fire was replied to by arson.- the château for all its finery was still a part of the war. Les Misérables is a classic that deserves to be read by all.","brand":"Country House Library","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":56307059720571,"sku":"10863461","price":8.81,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/2458\/8207\/files\/orig_516099_jpg.jpg?v=1782132357","url":"https:\/\/countryhouselibrary.co.uk\/products\/victor-hugos-les-miserables-vol-ii-nelson-1","provider":"Country House Library ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
