Reader's note

The predicament of Louise Bickford was not uncommon. When her husband died, leaving her to struggle along on a shoestring, she became dependant on the hospitability of each of her three daughters in turn. But efficient Miriam was preoccupied with the cares of a house, husband, and three children, while Eva, the actress, lived in her London flat a life verging on the Bohemian, and slovenly Anne could hardly care less. Our hearts go out to Louise as she jolts uncomfortably from one to the next, with occasional visits to a friend’s hotel in the Isle of Wight. Yet her ability to laugh at herself stands her in a good stead, and due to one Gordon Disher – alias Lester Drage, author of The Girl in the Bloodstained Bikini – her fortunes take an unexpected twist.
