Reader's note

If you have at any time thought that you had a temperament to do Secret Service work, you will enjoy every word of The Velvet Well. Jacque Deran, who fought with the Maquis, at the end of the war is given the task of getting to America some important documents connected with a forceful Fascist remnant there. The octopus-like tenacity with which they try to ensnare him and the consequent escapes are described so vividly that the reader finds himself, so to speak, in Deran’s shoes with all his doubts and fears. A The New Yorker said when it was published in American, ‘Things get tense indeed, so much so that the heartiest reader may find himself breathing heavily at the end.’
