Reader's note

This is a lovely blue edition of The Test Matches of 1954-55 - Victory in Australia by E.W.Swanton with a prologue and epilogue by C.B.Fry. This edition is reprinted from The Daily Telegraph. Each chapter tells of the test matches, one to five. After Australia had beaten England in England for the first time in 1882 The Sporting Times printed a mock obituary notice lamenting the death of English test cricket and adding that ‘the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.’ When, in the following winter, the Hon. Ivo Bligh took a team to Australia and reversed the result, certain ladies burned a stump, sealed the ashed in an urn and presented it to him. In his will, Hon. Ivo Bligh bequeathed the urn to M.C.C. It is to be seen now in the Imperial Cricket Memorial Gallery at Lord’s. Thus ‘the Ashes’ are not mythical.
