Reader's note

A book primarily for younger readers, but in no way unsuited to those of all ages who are interested in the wildlife of the British countryside. The author is a well known writer and lecturer and editor of the journal of the British Empire Naturalist’ Association; his book is a well planned and scientifically sound account of our animals and plant life, treated as a subject of lively and fascinating interest. The illustrations, too, mark a new high level in a book of general natural history. The book is in two sections: the first part is concerned with animal life, and starting with its simplest and lowliest form, the amoeba, the book proceeds step by step to the more advanced forms of insects, fishes, frogs, reptiles, birds and mammals. In the second part of the book plant life is treated in the same way from the most primitive plant the evolution of plant life is traced to its highest form.
