Reader's note

This pocket guide is designed to help readers identify many of the caterpillars found in gardens, parks and on country walks. It not only deals with the more common caterpillars to be found in the British Isles but also includes some which are more scarce but of special interest. Over 200 species are described with details of their food, plants, distribution and life histories. All the more usual pest species are included, and these will be of special interest to the gardener and horticulturist. The introduction gives a general outline of caterpillar biology and notes on collecting and conservation. Each caterpillar is accurately illustrated in full colour by Gordon Riley, and the silhouettes on the end-papers provide easy reference to caterpillar families.
