Reader's note

This is no common-organed guide book but a work of some scholarship and likely to become established as a standard world of reference. Burton is never erudite at the expense of readability, and those who would like to read discover the past will be interested to read a fascinating account, based on meteorological evidence, of the Lynmouth disaster of 1952. The author lived in North Devon and tramped every mile of the coastline he describes with such felicity - and every mile has its own story. He is an extremely intelligent traveller with the capacity to share his discoveries and pleasures with others. The North Devon Coast will be read and appreciated not only by holiday makers but by Devonians who already know the country well.
