Reader's note

The heir of Charlecote Manor, near Stratford-on-Avon, was missing, said to be dead, and his twelve year old brother David narrowly escaped being murdered. David therefore slipped away through the woods, fell in with a boy with a dancing bear, and set out with him for London. Together they survived the perils of the road, and in Elizabethan England, in which the story is set, these were many. Not only was there danger of starvation but also of thieves, tinkers, and worse. In happier times Davide has played with Shakespeare’s daughter Sue, so it was not surprising that he counted on getting help from him, and so made his way across the river to Southwark and the Globe Theatre. This is a fine, brisk story of mystery and adventure with a period setting well devised and not overloaded with details. The delightful illustrations are by Arthur Hall.
