Reader's note

This novel by Monica Dickens has London for its central character - London in the throes of change, yet somehow maintaining its personality, its traditions, and its courage. Cottingham Park might be found in a dozen metropolitan boroughs. Blitzed during the war it now bristles with new council flats and boasts a new affluence. The young attend school for longer, but education creates as many problems as it solves, widening the rift between succeeding generations. Perhaps there is more social contact, but there is less understanding: more money, but less enterprise. So intimately does Monica Dickens know her London that the pages of her book seem like pavements along which rea Londers move. A changing society is, as it were, documented for us through the eyes of man observers: May Wilson, the district nurse; the Bannings, tenants of a shabby Victorian house; housewives like Mrs Bott and shopkeepers like Mrs Angel; and even the school-children, who are taught be Grace Peel.
