Reader's note

This book provides an outline of the development of Greek philosophical thought down to and including Aristotle. It should suffice to give the general reader an indication of the purely Greek achievement in this field, and to serve as an introduction for those whose studies will lead them to pursue the subject further. No knowledge of the Greek language is presupposed in the reader, and it is hoped that the book may be of use to serious students in other fields, aushc as history of science, who have felt the need for an acquaintance with Greek ideas as a background to their own subject. The author is Professor of Ancient Philosophy and Master of Downing College, Cambridge.
