Reader's note

The air is tense before a summer storm: one rasp jangles all. A girl has been found dead - naked on a beach in Spain. The beach is the exclusive preserve of a group of rich Spaniards: it is their children who find the body which is to touch off such violent repercussions. Reaction is strongest in Javier, the most powerful and amoral figure in the group, and it is through his eyes that we see the ripples spread. This is not the traditional Spain of poverty and bull-fighting, of sombreros and flamenco, but a modern fast living Spain, prosperous but decadent. The affluent tycoons lounge in the torrid sun, sipping their whiskies, swapping partners with gay abandon: here is all the back biting of family holiday life, the gossip and the calamity, the flirting and the sex. Writing with a realism which is a new in Spanish letters the author was awarded the first Prix Formentor by an international panel of judges for this sharply focused picture of the manners and morals of a ‘dolce vita’ set and the doubt and unease underlying them.
