Reader's note

This delightful edition of Shirley is a perfect addition to any library. Set in Yorkshire amid the Industrial Depression that followed the Napoleonic Wars. Mill-owner Robert Moore is struggling to pay off his debt and has had to lay off many of his workers and introduce labour saving machinery, leading to discontent among the employees. He considers marrying the wealthy Shirley Keeldar, headstrong and independent, as a solution to his money problems. However, he truly cares for Caroline Helstone, his shy cousin, who is trapped in her financial dependency on her uncle. ‘God surely did not create us, and cause us to live, with the sole end of wishing always to die. I believe, in my heart, we were intended to prize life and enjoy it, so long as we retain it.’
