Reader's note

This is the first book to give the full story of all that is now known about the Roman-British town of Calleva, near Silchester, Hants – once a focal point of the Roman road system and a thriving ‘garden city’ of Romain Britain. Mrs M. Aylwin Cotton, who has written an introduction on the origins of Cavell, directed excavations there before the war, and Mr Boon continued this work during the last three years, living at Silchester and thoroughly exploring the surface features of the site. Twenty-one photographs, numerous line drawings (including a folding plan which is a visual summary of all that is known of the site), and a fully annotated list of references, will make this a valuable source of information to the student.
