Reader's note

At fourteen Tchaikovsky wrote his earliest known composition, a little waltz for piano dedicated to a former governess, and actually approached a poet about a libretto for a short opera. He had a few more desultory piano and singing lessons, but composed nothing more until 1860, when he had already left the school of jurisprudence and became a clerk in the ministry of justice. He then produced a song to Italian words, which was actually printed, thereby impressing his family with the reality of his musical talent. The composition outlined in this Penguin Score was first performed in 1886. Add this beautifully patterned book to your penguin collection today!
