Reader's note

Graham Greene describes this novel as ‘An Entertainment’, implying it is not to be classified amongst serious works. An entertainment it certainly is, but not without purpose. It mixes fun and frightfulness to produce a moral. The fun begins when James Wormold, British agent for vacuum cleaner in Havana, is approached by a representative of our secret service. Wormold’s day-dream is that one day he will awake to find he has amassed enough savings to bring him a steady income and enabled him to retire with his daughter Milly to England. He falls with the suggestion that he should act as a secret agent, and become, in fcat, our man in Havana. The story is thrilling as any genuine spy and counterspy story. It is impeccably written to Graham Greene’s cleverest recipe which is what makes this book such a treasure to own.
