Reader's note

The perfect gift for all lovers of classic literature and rare, vintage books. In every generation there appear authors who fail to secure in their lifetime the full reputation they deserve. One such was Ford Madox Ford who, when he died in 1939, had written about 70 books without ever, so to speak, getting his name in neon lights. It was partly his own fault, no doubt, for some of his books were casual and ephemeral. He was a copious and ardent writer and, apart from the creative work he accomplished in poetry, criticism and fiction, he founded The English Review, in whose pages many of the best English modern writers made their first appearance.
