Reader's note

They say that when a man is drowning he sees as in a flash the whole of his past life pass before him. Noone can say if this is really so. Yet a great crises we sometimes see life in retrospect, things forgotten, things loved and unimportant. So it was with Mary when she heard that her husband’s ship had been mined. As she lay in bed that sleepless night waiting for the moment to find out whether he has survived, her mind went back over the years. She remembered perfect holidays in Dorset at her grandfather’s house, the rides and parties, her schoolgirl adoration of her cousin; the drab routine of lessons, duty visits to her grandmother, her feckless but genial uncle. She remembers her first serious love affair, with its beliwdermant, delight, and disappointment; then then startling joy of meeting Sam, how on that day after their engagement they has visited the now deserted house in Dorset, and how much smaller it seemed.
