Reader's note

Add a touch of sophistication to your bookshelf with this vintage edition of Margaret Catchpole by Richard Cobbold. This novel narrates the life of Margaret Catchpole, born in Suffolk. She worked as a servant for several different families before being employed by the Cobbold Household. During this time, she falls for a smuggler and steals a horse from the family. Instead of being hanged, as the punishment for horse theft was back then, she was imprisoned, and after escaping from Ipswich Gaol she was deported to Australia. This true story, fictionalised by the son of her employer, is a fascinating read.
