Reader's note

This pocket-sized classic book has a salmon pink dust jacket and features an introduction by Mary Lascelles. With Mansfield Park, first published in 1814, Jane Austen temporarily abandoned the field of pure social comedy so successfully exploited in Pride and Prejudice for the sterner theme of virtue and its rewards. Fanny Price is the most subdued of heroines, but her humility and helplessness succeed in winning from readers the sympathy and affection which her creator obviously felt for her. There are, too, some excellent satirical portraits, and everyone who appreciates Mrs. Bennet will enjoy the penetrating presentation of Mrs. Norris's ill-nature and Lady Bertram's lethargy.
