Reader's note

George Orwell was born in India in 1903. He served in the Indian Imperial Police, fought in the Spanish civil war where he was wounded, discharged and went on to become a school master. He worked in bookshops, owned a grocers all while writing exception books like Down and Out in Paris and London. “It is a feeling of relief, almost of pleasure, at knowing yourself at last genuinely down and out. You have talked so often of going to the dogs — and well, here are the dogs, and you have reached them, and you can stand it. It takes off a lot of anxiety.”
